There are two ways to visit Trier. One lives in the city and drives out into the green for an afternoon. The other lives in the green – and drives into the city for an afternoon. For the second, there's Kordel: a village in the narrow Kyll valley, 15 kilometres north of Trier, with woods, red sandstone cliffs, two caves you can walk into, and a ruined castle above the valley. Here the Eifelsteig ends, here the Römerpfad (Roman trail) starts, here the Kyll cycle path begins down to the Moselle. And in the evening it grows as quiet as it never does in the city.

The route we tell every guest about first is the Römerpfad: from Kordel up to the Klausen and Genoveva caves, past the Geyersley viewpoint and the traces of a Roman copper mine to Ramstein Castle high above the Butzerbachtal. On day two, the Eifelsteig to Trier – or by bike along the Kyll to the Moselle. On day three, Trier: Porta Nigra, the Imperial Baths, the cathedral, a glass of Riesling – and back into the valley by train.

For those who want to go further afield: the Saar loop with its treetop path (50 minutes), Luxembourg City (50 minutes), the waterfalls and rock formations of the Müllerthal in Luxembourg ("Little Luxembourg Switzerland", 40 minutes) and the Moselle at Bernkastel for wine festivals and Federweißer.
