Golden autumn in Trier – harvest, Federweißer, long trails.

When the grape harvest begins in September, the whole Moselle valley smells of grapes: tractors with hods in the Olewig vineyards, Federweißer (young, still-fermenting wine) and onion tart in the Straußwirtschaften (winemakers' seasonal taverns), and from October the steep vineyard slopes on the Moselle and Saar turn yellow, red and gold. For many of our guests, autumn is the loveliest time in Trier – mild, quiet, without the summer crowds, with the autumn school holidays in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Dutch herfstvakantie as the classic travel weeks.

Our holiday apartments are right in the middle of it: in the wine village of Olewig, on the Saar near Konz, in the Kyll valley near Kordel and around the Trier old town. For wine and harvest: the Olewig Suite in the middle of the wine village – the winemakers, the wine festival and the Straußwirtschaften are all round the corner. The Saartal Suite and Saar Home in Konz-Filzen, a few steps from the König Johann winery, for groups of up to 8.

For walkers: the Kylltalperle in Kordel, the starting point of the last Eifelsteig stage, with Ramstein Castle, a Roman trail and a station in the village.

Frequently asked questions.

When is the grape harvest on the Moselle?

Depending on the vintage, from mid-September to late October; the steep Riesling slopes are usually harvested last. Federweißer is available from the first week of harvest for around four to six weeks.

What is a Straußwirtschaft?

A winemaker is allowed to serve their own wines in their own premises for a few weeks each year – recognisable by the wreath or broom hung on the door. A small menu, their own wines, often the most honest place to try the new vintage. We'll tell you which ones are open when you arrive.

What's the weather like in October?

Mild and often sunny, 10–18°C, with morning fog in the valley that usually clears by midday. Ideal for walking and cycling; pack a rain jacket all the same.

When are the autumn school holidays?

Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Dutch herfstvakantie usually fall in the first two to three weeks of October. The exact dates change every year – book early for these weeks.

Are there still boat trips on the Moselle in autumn?

Most services from Trier-Zurlauben run until the end of October, when the winter break begins. Bike ferries and trains along the Moselle run all year round.
