Trier Christmas market: mulled wine against a 2,000-year backdrop

A Christmas market between medieval gabled houses is lovely. One where Germany's oldest cathedral rises behind the stalls and a Roman city gate stands three lanes away is something else: the Trier Christmas market is, for us, among the most atmospheric anywhere – and we're only moderately objective, because it's on our doorstep.

What awaits you

🎄Two squares, one marketThe market spreads across the main market square with its half-timbered gables and the Domfreihof right in front of the cathedral – two backdrops, a few steps apart.Traditionally from late November until just before Christmas
🍷Mulled wine from the winemakerThe home advantage of a wine region: here the Glühwein often comes from a Moselle winemaker rather than a tanker – white too, and as winemaker's mulled wine made with Riesling.Expect a mug deposit – the mug makes a fine souvenir
🥨Food with local colourAlongside bratwurst and potato fritters you'll find regional dishes from Winzersteak to hearty local fare – and sweets in every form. Our order of business: savoury first, then roasted almonds.Queues are shortest at lunchtime
The city in winter lightPorta Nigra, cathedral and basilica are floodlit in the evening – the stroll from the market to the illuminated Porta is compulsory on any winter visit.Bring a camera, it's worth it
🛍️Crafts & stallsWoodwork, nativity scenes, wool, jewellery – the mix is more artisanal than at many big-city markets, and there's room to wander between the stands.Much more relaxed on weekdays
🚂Winter trips around itCombine the market with a winter day out: Luxembourg with its Winterlights is three-quarters of an hour away, and the city's museums warm you in any weather. Our rainy-day list works in December too

Our tips for your visit

Come midweek. On Advent Saturdays, half the region shares the lanes – on a Tuesday at 5 pm you get the same market with half the crowd. Book early applies doubly in Advent: the weekends sell out far ahead, and if you book directly with us, you stay at the best price a few minutes' walk from the mulled wine. And wrap up warm – the Moselle valley is damp and the cold creeps. The advantage of an apartment: after the market, your own kitchen awaits for a closing tea, not just a hotel corridor.

The exact dates and opening hours are published each year on the official Trier Christmas market site – check briefly before you travel.
