Saarburg: the day trip with a waterfall in the middle of town

There aren't many towns where a waterfall crashes right through the centre. Saarburg is one of them: the Leukbach stream drops around 18 metres between the old-town houses, half-timbered facades and mill wheels cling to the rock on either side, and a castle watches over it all. From Konz you're there in fifteen minutes, from Trier in a scant half hour – by train, by car or, loveliest of all, by bike along the Saar.

What makes Saarburg special

💦The waterfallThe spectacle in the middle of town: the Leukbach plunges into the depths right in the centre, the old town crowding around it. The best views are from the little bridges and terraces all around.Lit up in the evening – worth a second visit
🏰Saarburg castleA short, sharp climb, a big reward: from the tower you overlook the rooftops, the bends of the Saar and the vineyards all around. One of the finest viewpoints in the whole Saar valley. The panorama costs nothing but legwork
🔔Mabilon bell foundryChurch bells were cast here until 2002 – today the workshop is a museum where everything still stands as if the founder were about to return. Surprisingly gripping, for children too.In the Staden quarter, near the waterfall
⚙️Amüseum by the waterfallThe little museum right by the mills tells how the stream powered mill wheels, workshops and the town's electricity for centuries – compact and lovingly done.Combines with the waterfall in five minutes
🍷Taste Saar wineThe Saar stands for some of the finest Rieslings anywhere. Around Saarburg, estates and wine bars pour – dry, mineral, unmistakable. Our neighbours in Konz-Filzen are among them
🚤Cruise the SaarIn summer, excursion boats leave from Saarburg – a leisurely loop between the vineyards that delivers from below the view you had from the castle above.Seasonal – check departures beforehand
🌀Encore: the Saar LoopA good half hour further by car waits Germany's most famous river view: the great Saar Loop from the Cloef viewpoint at Orscholz, from the treetop walk if you like.Worth the extension if you have wheels
🥾Walking above the valleyPanoramic trails thread through the steep vineyards around Saarburg. Even a short loop through the vines delivers the classic Saar valley views.Sturdy shoes – vineyard paths are steep

The perfect Saarburg day

Get there in the morning by train or bike, castle first (while your legs are fresh), then down through the lanes to the waterfall and into one of the cafés overlooking the stream. In the afternoon, bell foundry or boat trip, then a wine tasting – and if you came by bike, roll back down the Saar to Konz with the river at your back.

From the Saartal Suite and the Saar Home in Konz-Filzen you're especially quick into the Saar valley – and in the evening you're sitting right where the Saar wine comes from.
